I was born and raised in Colorado, growing up here in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
As a young man, I started out in the military, serving in the U.S. Army as a clerk. I took my basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. I then spent a year at Camp Casey, Korea with the 2nd Medical Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division. The Army returned me to my home in Colorado after my tour overseas, sending my to the 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment in the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs.
When I was discharged after three years of service, I went to college at Colorado State University in Pueblo, Colorado (f.k.a. the University of Southern Colorado), where I received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy. I graduated with distinction, and was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, 1991 for my academic performance there.
I enrolled in the military science program there, and received my commission through the as an officer while serving in the Colorado Army National Guard in an ambulance company based in Trinidad, Colorado. I served in the Guard for three more years as a communications officer in a signal battalion in until my honorable discharge several years after the Gulf War. During that time I served on temporary postings at Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Gordon, Georgia; and at the Persidium in San Francisco, California.
During my military career, I earned an Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
When I was done with college, I became a banker, working as a loan processor, new accounts representative, teller, and loan officer for nearly a decade.
Twelve years ago, I took a leap and became a middle school school social studies teacher to pursue a lifelong desire to become an educator. The first five years of my career as a teacher were spent teaching American History to 7th and 8th graders at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa, Colorado. For the past seven years, I have been teaching 7th grade at Salida Middle School. I have a vocation that I truly love, and cannot imagine doing anything else with my life.
I love spending time with my wife, Carolyn, reading novels and books on history, and hiking in the mountains (especially Green Creek Trail). Recently, I picked up the violin and began relearning how to play it from my childhood. My favorite song to play on the violin is "Sad Romance" by Thao Nguyen Xanh.
